Bucks County Chapter DAR and Delta Sorority Foundation School Library Donation
On August 27, 2013 at Philadelphia’s Elkin Elementary School, Bucks County Chapter DAR and Delta Research & Educational Foundation partnered to donate copies of "Patriots of African Descent in the Revolutionary War" by Dr Marion Lane to the School District of Philadelphia’s students and libraries. This initiative was made possible by an NSDAR Special Projects Grant obtained by Bucks County DAR with Delta Research and Educational Foundation (Delta Sigma Theta Sorority), who provided matching funds. Dr. Lane’s colorfully illustrated book opens the eyes of the young reader to the roles people of color played in the American Revolution – a story of patriotism that has not yet been fully told in our primary and secondary educational institutions. Dr. Lane will be providing curriculum workshops for teachers to help them personalize this book – particularly for their students of African descent as they consider that one of their ancestors may have been a patriot of the American Revolution.
Those participating included Dr. William Hite, Superintendent, Philadelphia Public Schools; Philadelphia Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell; Deborah Peaks Coleman, Program Director - Delta Research and Educational Foundation; Mary J Sanchez, Principal - Lewis Elkin School; Roberta P McMullen, PSSDAR State Regent; Michael Quinn, President and CEO of the Museum of the American Revolution; and Mr. John James, Dr Lane’s father and a member of the Philadelphia-Continental Chapter SAR.
